Landslides caught on tape from around the world
The analysis of landslides and landslide motion has advanced far beyond the old methods of looking for cracks and measuring them over several months time. Precision instruments meaure motion in a short period of time and at a fraction of the cost of other methods.
Good reference article by M. J. Selby discussing Soil Creep and several older but interesting methods for documenting motion. Presented in it's entirety as a PDF.
By Douglas E. Moran - Douglas E. Moran, Inc.
Each of the reports prepared under this project includes a description of the geologic materials along the highway corridor, the distribution and types of landslides, and the potential impacts of landslides on the highway. Geologic and landslide inventory maps are included in each report. In most reports, Plate 1(the geologic map) and Plate 2 (the landslide map) are formatted into map sections that can be downloaded and printed on 11x 17 inch size pages.
While rainfall-induced landslides can happen within minutes, the wet conditions that precede them can take several hours or days to develop. But many countries in high-risk areas lack the resources to maintain the extensive weather networks required to successfully observe these conditions.
California Rainfall Data by station. This link allows you request rainfall data from the California Department of Water Resources database. Records vary in quality and length.
